Professor Persikov, an eccentric zoologist, stumbles upon a new light ray that accellerates growth and reproduction rates in living organisms. In the wake of a plague that has decimated the country's poultry stocks, Persikov's discovery is exploited as a means to correct the problem. As foreign agents, the state and the Soviet media all seize upon the red ray, matters get out of hand.
Set in 1928 but written four years earlier, during Stalin's rise to power, The Fatal Eggs is both an early piece of science fiction reminiscent of H.G. Wells and a biting, brilliant satire on the consequence of the abuse of power and knowledge.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Fate of Genius under Communism
Verified PurchaseIf a person like this existed in a different society, what would his fate be like?
What really stood out was that Persikov had zero celebrity status in the society in which he lived.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bulgakov never lets you down
Verified PurchaseA rare example of early Russian science fiction in H.G.Wells style (and well-masked poilitical satire) from a master. My only complaint is that the novel is too short. Oh well... would you like some eggs?

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant inventor, brilliant invention, brilliantly bloody consequences!
Verified PurchaseIf you've never read anything by Bulgakov try this one for starters. It's short, witty, simple but poignant. One-day (or in my case one-night) read. Even if, by the beginning of the end you know what went wrong, you still love it and laugh a lot. Leaving aside political background, satirical sub current ignored, it is a bloody good story (loads of blood). And it's almost hundred years old. Once you'll finish it, you'll buy Master and Margarita. Believe me.

4.0 out of 5 stars Short and to the point.
Verified PurchaseThis outwardly satirical sci-fi novel is as relevant today as it was in the post-revolutionary soviet union. From a greatly under appreciated and often suppressed author with ideas that were far ahead of his time, this is a must-read for fans of Tom Wolfe, Vonnegut and the like. Not quite as abstract as his better known, The Master and Margarita, this was a quick, fun read with a lot to say and even more to think about. Excellent! Bulgakov at his raw best. Read this book.
