5.0 out of 5 stars The Ancient Near East

First - be sure you get both volume 1 and 2. These are an excellent quick review of the history of the Ancient Near East. They are well written and easy reading. (I would buy other more specific books for the latest historical dates however.) There is plenty of detail but not presented in the usual boring way. I like the way Amelie Kuhrt writes. Her special area of study is Ancient Persia.

5.0 out of 5 stars without a doubt, this 2 volume set is the best 'introductory' literature on the ancient near east available

this 2 volume set may be dense, but it is by far the best literature for anyone, especially students, as an introductory to the Ancient Near East. the only downside to this set is that there hasn't been an updated edition made. since this set was published prior to many of the conflicts throughout the Middle East that have severely intervened with further studies, it is difficult to know whether the many 'in progress' studies the author mentions were ever completed and if they were, what final results they yielded. overall, this 2 volume set is a must-read for anyone interested in the topic of the Ancient Near East. while there are a handful of similar books on the same topic that have been published more recently, none have been as extensive in their coverage and tend to be a bit too selective on what they choose to cover, giving readers somewhat of an inaccurate view of the period.

5.0 out of 5 stars Probably the best general, but detailed

Probably the best general, but detailed, history of the period. I am just finishing Vol. 1 so I have read any of the second volume yet. I am sure that it will be as well written as volume 1.
