About the authors
When Susan Slaughter and I first started thinking about writing a book about SAS software, there really weren’t many good sources for learning SAS. We wanted to change that. We thought that an introductory SAS book should make learning SAS easy and fun. So we set out to create a book that would do just that. At the time, I was working at the University of California, Davis supporting scientific software for the campus. When people would ask me if there was a good book they could use to learn SAS, I would cringe as I pointed them to my shelf full of SAS manuals. It was overwhelming for new SAS users. We were determined that our book would be small, and approachable, and cover most of what people needed to know. I’m happy to say that "The Little SAS Book" is now in its sixth edition and going strong! As the book changed over the years, so did my role at the university. I moved from software support, to being the lead SAS programmer for several epidemiological studies. I am happily retired from the university now, but I am still active in the SAS world attending conferences and updating our books.
I am best known as half of the team that writes "The Little SAS Book" series. I learned SAS in graduate school, and quickly discovered that data analysis is fun! So after I completed my degree, I bluffed my way into a job as a SAS programmer, and - as they say - never looked back. At every job I had, I found myself answering my colleagues' questions about SAS programming. I saw the problems people ran into, and where they got stuck. Before long I had started an in-house SAS users' group and begun teaching SAS classes. So when Lora Delwiche asked if I would like to write a book on SAS programming with her, I already had a lot of ideas about what the book should be like. The First Edition of "The Little SAS Book" was published in 1995. Since then a lot of people have told me that "The Little SAS Book" made it possible for them to get their first job. As far as I'm concerned, that's the highest compliment an author can receive. But we've gotten some compliments of the more standard variety too:
"The Little SAS Book: A Primer, Fourth Edition" received the Award of Excellence from the Society for Technical Publications International Technical Publications Competition 2008-2009.
"The Little SAS Book for Enterprise Guide 4.1" received the Award of Excellence from the Society for Technical Publications Carolina Technical Publications Competition 2006-2007.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Little SAS Book
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI'm using this simply as a revision aid: after a few years of using different products (R, C++, MATLAB) I'm returning to SAS and - quite apart from the fact that the Little Book is no longer quite so Little as I remember it being years ago - the book remains a very good source.
By contrast, if you're completely new to SAS, I'd recommend looking at something else.
