Fair Work's cut to penalty rates, the biggest cut to wages since the Great Depression, is a clear example of the class war waged on a daily basis by the rich. Meanwhile the resistance against Trump has put mass action and struggle back at the heart of contemporary society.
The contest at the heart of society was analysed by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels more than 100 years ago. In the Communist Manifesto they famously write that "The history of all hitherto existing society is the history of class struggles." In the manifesto they outline the blood soaked rule of capitalism.
But the manifesto is more than just a condemnation of capitalism. It is a guide to action that all radicals should read and learn from, an active intervention into the class struggle and a call to arms that still rings out today. Marx and Engels write of how the revolutionary struggle of the working class can topple capitalism and liberate humanity, establishing a truly democratic and egalitarian society.
If you're interested in engaging with the radical lessons of the Communist Manifesto come along to a talk and discussion this Wednesday evening with Socialist Alternative Adelaide.
